Will Adventure training help with my dog's behavior and manners??
While behavior modification and basic training are important for our dogs to learn the skills they need for life in the modern world, a lot of behavior issues stem from not having their needs met. And for many dogs, outdoor experiences, sensory experinces (especially scent), and moving their bodies helps dog meet their innate needs.
In addition human's benefit from spending time in nature. My Master's degree these focused on the mirid of benefits of spending time in nature.
When we spend time training outdoor skills and engaging in partnership based activities in nature with our dogs it can go a long why toward preventing and solving behavior problems. Adventure training compliments behavior modification and basic training!
Do you walk client dogs off leash?
I do not. But I do walk client dogs on a long line to give them a chance to explore while not putting too much pressure on the dog. And I will work on specific skills -- like retrieves and recalls while in a fenced area or on a long line. Off leash skills take a while to develop and it's important to work on these skills both with the trainer and with the family. Moving too fast can cause more restriction to the dog's freedom in the end. There are many ways we can give the dog appropriate adventure and choice while still on a longer leash.
